Engineering in The War Within is a profession that allows you to create advanced gadgets, weapons, and other useful PvE and PvP items. This guide will help you level up your Engineering skill from 1 to 100 fast and hassle-free.
Engineering pairs best with Mining, as many of the materials required, such as Bismuth and Aqirite, can be gathered directly from mining nodes. This can save you significant gold, which you might otherwise spend at the Auction House.
In The War Within, Engineering focuses heavily on discovering new recipes through the Inventing system. After reaching skill level 25, you’ll need to use your Invent ability to unlock new blueprints and improve your creations. We’ll explain all you need to know about this system as a part of this guide.
TWW Engineering Trainer Location
You can learn Khaz Algar Engineering from the profession trainer Thermalseer Arhdas in Dornogal, the main city in The War Within, located at coordinates 49.0, 56.0 on the Isle of Dorn.
The trainer and crafting table are easy to access, so you can start crafting and leveling your profession quickly.
Engineering Profession Knowledge Overview
Profession Knowledge Points are a form of currency you earn while progressing through the Engineering profession. These points are used to unlock and enhance different specialization trees, allowing you to craft more powerful and intricate items, improve crafting skills, and unlock new recipes.
How to Earn Knowledge Points:
- First Craft Bonuses: Crafting an item for the first time awards you Knowledge Points. This encourages players to try crafting every available recipe at least once to maximize their point gains.
- NPC Crafting Orders: Completing crafting orders placed by other players will also reward you with Knowledge Points. This system encourages interaction with the in-game economy and crafting community.
- Knowledge Point Treasures: Scattered across Khaz Algar and other areas, these treasures can be looted to provide additional Knowledge Points.
- Daily Cooldowns: Engineering includes activities like Inventing, which have daily cooldowns. These provide prototypes that can be disassembled for Knowledge Points.
How to Use Knowledge Points: once you collect Knowledge Points, you can spend them to unlock branches in the Engineering Specialization tree.
This tree includes:
- Inventing: Unlocks powerful recipes and boosts for high-end Engineering items.
- Disassembly: Improves your ability to break down items for rare components.
- Explosives: Specializes in creating bombs and other powerful gadgets.
- Toys and Trinkets: A fun specialization focused on crafting unique gadgets and devices.
TWW Engineering Specs Explained
To unlock Engineering specializations in WoW The War Within, you need to reach skill level 25 and use Knowledge Points to enhance your abilities.
There are 3 main Engineering specializations:
- Engineered Equipment: Focuses on crafting gear like weapons, bracers, and profession equipment. This is ideal for players who want to fulfill crafting orders or create personal high-quality items.
- Devices: Specializes in creating explosives, tinkers, and utility items, such as gadgets and toys. If you’re interested in crafting items for utility or selling on the Auction House, this path is a great option.
- Inventing: Boosts overall Engineering stats and improves your crafting efficiency. It enhances your skill with all Engineering crafts, making it a core specialization for any build.
As you know from the previous block, Knowledge Points are earned by completing tasks, finding treasures, and crafting for the first time. These points are permanent (cannot be refunded), so it’s important to carefully plan how you spend them. You can focus on increasing your crafting skill to guarantee high-quality items or invest in Ingenuity and Concentration to make up for skill gaps and create top-tier items faster, though this limits how much you can craft daily.
TWW Engineering specializations are meant to help you tailor your Engineering to suit your playstyle: you can focus on crafting gear, creating useful devices, or maximizing the overall crafting efficiency.
Engineering Discovery System Overview
In The War Within, the Engineering Discovery System allows you to unlock new recipes beyond what trainers teach. The system works through a mix of gathering scrap and using special abilities like Invent and Scour Through Scrap.
Here’s how it works:
- Inventing: Once per day, you can use the Invent ability, which creates a Prototype. When you use the Prototype, it unlocks a new recipe for you. This is one of the main ways to discover recipes.
- Scrap and Prototypes: You collect Pile of Rusted Scrap from mobs and other activities in Khaz Algar. Using Scour Through Scrap on these piles gives you a chance to receive Prototypes, which can unlock more recipes.
- Hastily Scrawled Notes: Once you’ve unlocked all the Prototype recipes, you’ll stop getting Unrecognizable Prototypes and start getting Hastily Scrawled Notes. Collect 15 of these, and you can turn them into Comprehensibly Organized Ideas, which let you choose from three new recipes.
TWW Engineering discovery system requires gathering a lot of scrap, and daily use of Invent will help you progress faster. By combining scrap farming and daily inventing, you’ll unlock all Engineering recipes over time.

Leveling Engineering 40-100
Leveling Engineering from 40 to 100 in The War Within relies heavily on the discovery system and crafting specific recipes.
After reaching skill 40, you will start using Inventing and Scour Through Scrap to unlock more recipes. These activities provide the core methods for reaching level 100.
There are 2 Primary Methods how to level TWW Engineering from 40 to 100:
- Inventing: Use your daily Invent cooldown to create Prototypes, which unlock new recipes and provide 2 skill points per use. This method alone can get you to 100, but it will take around 15 days if you consistently craft items.
- Crafting Recipes: Some discovered recipes give skill points when crafted, particularly toys and gadgets like Convincingly Realistic Jumper Cables. Craft these for skill points, especially between levels 80-100.
The Convincingly Realistic Jumper Cables is the most cost-effective recipe to craft. To level up quickly to 100, continue using Scour Through Scrap until you unlock this recipe, and then craft it until you reach around level 92.
Here’s an estimate of the materials needed for this process, assuming you start at level 40:
- 70x Convincingly Realistic Jumper Cables: Requires 700x Pile of Rusted Scrap, 140x Handful of Bismuth Bolts, 140x Whimsical Wiring, 70x Gyrating Gear, and 70x Safety Switch.
You can continue crafting Convincingly Realistic Jumper Cables up to around level 95, but skill points will be gained more slowly. For the last 8 levels, using Inventing is recommended to guarantee skill points and reach level 100 efficiently.
Crafting Tips:
- Save expensive toys and items for higher levels (80-90) since they provide guaranteed skill points up to level 90.
- Use Inventing every day. This daily cooldown provides both skill points and access to new recipes, which will help you diversify your leveling strategy.
By following these steps, you can level your Engineering to 100 efficiently using a combination of daily Inventing and targeted crafting.
