The Bottomless Pit is an exotic quest in Destiny 2 that starts in the Crota’s End raid and allows you to get the Necrochasm AR. It is still available in the latest D2 content, The Final Shape DLC. This quest has several steps, including battling with the Hive, collecting the Essence of the Oversoul, and killing Crota.

As said above, completing the Bottomless Pit quest rewards you with the Necrochasm auto rifle, a powerful Exotic weapon with the unique perk that triggers Cursed Thrall explosions on precision kills, refilling the magazine. Necrochasm is highly effective in PvE and synergizes well with items like Necrotic Grip, making it an A-tier choice for endgame PvE activities and B-tier for PvP (read more about this weapon and how to get it below).
Bottomless Pit Reward Overview: Necrochasm AR
Necrochasm is an exotic auto rifle obtained through the Bottomless Pit quest in the Crota’s End raid. Known for its unique perks, Cursebringer and Desperation,
Necrochasm triggers Cursed Thrall explosions on precision kills, which refill the magazine and boost the rate of fire. This makes it an incredible weapon for clearing enemies in PvE content.
What Makes Necrochasm Special:
- Cursebringer Perk: Precision kills cause Cursed Thrall explosions, creating devastating chain reactions.
- Desperation Perk: Reloading after a precision or explosion kill boosts the rate of fire, stability, and aim assist.
- Powerful Add Clearing: Excellent for quickly wiping out groups of enemies in PvE.
D2 Necrochasm is considered an A-tier weapon for PvE (Thrall Explosions have been buffed with around +30% damage) and a B-tier option for PvP. While it lacks synergy with subclasses, it’s great for add-clearing in all types of PvE content. I would say, that in D2 TFS it is a must-have weapon for activities like raids and dungeons (having at least one member with it in your fireteam will be very handy). Below, we explain how to complete the Bottomless Pit quest to unlock this powerful exotic.
How to start the Bottomless Pit Quest
To begin the Bottomless Pit quest, you must first complete the Crota’s End raid. After defeating Crota in the final encounter, approach the sword relic located in the Crota boss room. This works as the raid’s vendor. Interacting with it will grant you the Bottomless Pit quest for free. Make to pick it up before leaving the CE raid.
Step 1: Defeat Hive with Husk of the Pit
The first task is to use the Husk of the Pit, a basic auto rifle provided at the start of the quest, to defeat 100 Hive enemies. If you lose Husk of the Pit, you can reclaim it from your Collections.
For faster completion, kill Hive enemies inside the Crota’s End raid. Enemies defeated in the raid grant significantly more progress. If you prefer an easier activity, head to the Altars of Sorrow on the Moon, where waves of Hive enemies spawn endlessly. This step is straightforward, but ensure all kills are done with Husk of the Pit to count toward your goal.
Step 2: Collect Essence of the Oversoul
Once you’ve dealt with the Hive, the next challenge is to collect 20 Essence of the Oversoul, a rare currency tied to the Crota’s End raid. Essence drops randomly from raid encounters, but there are ways to maximize your progress:
- Completing the raid for the first time each week guarantees two Essence from a full clear.
- Additional clears grant one Essence each.
- Specific raid triumphs award up to 14 Essence in total, so focusing on these can be highly efficient.
- Defeating the Ir Yût or Crota encounters repeatedly also provides a chance for additional Essence drops.
Since Essence collection is tied to the raid, this step will require multiple runs unless you are extremely lucky. Stick with your fireteam and aim to complete triumphs alongside regular clears to make the process smoother. After collecting 20 Essence, you’ll unlock Eidolon Ally, a Legendary version of Necrochasm.
Step 3: Defeat Crota Again
With the Essence of the Oversoul in hand, it’s time to face Crota one more time. Head back into the raid and complete the final encounter. There’s no need to do anything extra during this step; simply ensure the quest is active when Crota is defeated. Once the fight is over, the quest will be marked as complete.
After defeating Crota, return to the sword relic in the boss arena. Hand in the completed quest, and you’ll receive Necrochasm, the must-have Exotic auto rifle. Its unique perks, including explosions from precision kills, make it a standout weapon for PvE content.

How to Get the Necrochasm Catalyst
The Necrochasm Catalyst is an important upgrade for this Exotic auto rifle in Destiny 2. It boosts the weapon’s performance and is unlocked through the Bottomless Pit quest.
To get the Necrochasm Catalyst, you need to collect 35 Essence of the Oversoul. This resource is found in the Crota’s End raid and is required to complete the quest.
Here’s how you can farm this Essence:
- Get Essence from completing raid encounters, with higher chances from the Ir Yût and Crota fights.
- Complete specific raid triumphs, which grant bonus Essence.
- Farming the raid multiple times will be necessary to gather the total amount.
Once you collect 35 Essence, the Catalyst will automatically unlock. No kills or additional steps are needed after collecting the Essence.
What Does the Catalyst Do? The Necrochasm Catalyst adds the Outlaw perk to the weapon. With Outlaw, landing precision kills will greatly speed up your reload time. This upgrade works perfectly with Necrochasm’s ability to cause explosive chain reactions (and as we said above it’s the main reason to use this AR in PvE). If you enjoy using this weapon, the Catalyst is essential for making it even more effective in raids, strikes, and other activities.
