What Is Lumber in WoW?

Lumber is a Warbound crafting reagent used for Player Housing decor. It is not sold on the Auction House and cannot be traded between players. Because it is Warbound, Lumber can be used across characters on the same Warband.
There are currently 12 Lumber types. Each type comes from a specific group of zones connected to an expansion. This means you need to travel across older content as well as current Midnight zones when collecting materials for a large collection of housing decor.
A normal Lumber node can provide 1 to 3 pieces of Lumber. The exact amount varies from node to node.
Lumber is shared across your Warband. You can farm on one character and use the collected material for housing projects on another character.
How to Unlock Lumber Gathering

Before flying around Azeroth looking for nodes, unlock Lumber tracking on your character.
| Step | Action |
| 1 | Complete Lumber For You from your housing neighborhood Lumberjack. |
| 2 | Alliance characters can speak with Lestia Goldenstrike in Founder’s Point. |
| 3 | Horde characters can speak with Xiz’ro in Razorwind Shores. |
| 4 | Use the Harvesting Hatchet. |
| 5 | Open the Tracking menu and enable Find Lumber. |
The current Harvesting Hatchet is consumed when used. It teaches the Find Lumber tracking ability, so you do not need to keep the hatchet in your bags after using it.
Important: If Lumber does not appear on your minimap, open the Tracking menu and make sure Find Lumber is enabled.
The 12 Lumber Types

Each Lumber type is connected to a specific expansion or region group. The older material totals below are reference figures from Housing profession material calculations. They can change when new decor recipes are added.
| Lumber | Expansion | Recommended Zones | Reference Total |
| Ironwood Lumber | Classic | Ashenvale, Duskwood | 506 |
| Olemba Lumber | The Burning Crusade | Zangarmarsh, Nagrand | 512 |
| Coldwind Lumber | Wrath of the Lich King | Grizzly Hills, Borean Tundra | 465 |
| Ashwood Lumber | Cataclysm | Mount Hyjal, Twilight Highlands | 451 |
| Bamboo Lumber | Mists of Pandaria | Kun Lai Summit, Krasarang Wilds | 526 |
| Shadowmoon Lumber | Warlords of Draenor | Shadowmoon Valley, Frostfire Ridge | 451 |
| Fel Touched Lumber | Legion | Azsuna, Broken Shore | 594 |
| Darkpine Lumber | Battle for Azeroth | Zuldazar, Tiragarde Sound | 476 |
| Arden Lumber | Shadowlands | Ardenweald | 532 |
| Dragonpine Lumber | Dragonflight | Azure Span, Emerald Dream | 654 |
| Dornic Fir Lumber | The War Within and K’aresh | Isle of Dorn, Hallowfall, K’aresh | 559 |
| Thalassian Lumber | Midnight | Eversong Woods, Harandar, Voidstorm | Varies |
Where to Farm Each Lumber Type

Ashenvale and Duskwood for Ironwood
Ironwood Lumber comes from Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms. Look for zones with accessible forest paths and enough open space to maintain a smooth flying route.
Zangarmarsh for Olemba
Olemba Lumber is found in Outland zones. Zangarmarsh is a practical starting zone because its terrain is easy to navigate and it also offers other farming opportunities.
Grizzly Hills and Northrend for Coldwind
Coldwind Lumber is found across Northrend. Grizzly Hills is a useful starting zone, while Borean Tundra offers broad terrain for simple loops.
Twilight Highlands for Ashwood
Ashwood Lumber comes from Cataclysm zones. Twilight Highlands is a useful farming option because several areas provide accessible nodes without requiring a complicated vertical route.
Kun Lai Summit for Bamboo
Bamboo Lumber comes from Pandaria. Kun Lai Summit is one of the most recognizable areas for this material.
Draenor for Shadowmoon Lumber
Shadowmoon Lumber is currently farmable in Draenor. The material was unavailable in some early Housing phases, but current Draenor gathering works normally.
Legion zones for Fel Touched Lumber
Fel Touched Lumber comes from the Broken Isles and Argus. Azsuna, Broken Shore, and other Legion zones can be used for farming.
BFA zones for Darkpine Lumber
Darkpine Lumber is found throughout Battle for Azeroth zones, including Zuldazar and Tiragarde Sound.
Ardenweald for Arden Lumber
Arden Lumber is tied to the Shadowlands. Ardenweald is the most natural choice when you want to focus entirely on this material.
Azure Span for Dragonpine
Dragonpine Lumber comes from Dragonflight zones. Azure Span is a strong starting point for a dedicated Dragonpine farming session.
Khaz Algar and K’aresh for Dornic Fir
Dornic Fir Lumber is available in Khaz Algar and K’aresh. The current material source includes multiple zones rather than a single mandatory farming location.
Midnight zones for Thalassian Lumber
Thalassian Lumber is the current Midnight Lumber type. It can be gathered in Eversong Woods, Harandar, and Voidstorm.
Harandar can provide a high number of nodes, although hostile mobs can interrupt gathering. Gnarldor Isle on The Coiled Isle is a useful alternative when you want a quieter route with fewer hostile mobs.
What Counts as a Lumber Node?

Lumber nodes are not limited to large living trees. The gathering object can appear on different wooden surfaces and natural objects depending on the zone.
| Node Type | What to Watch For |
| Living trees | Standard forest Lumber nodes |
| Dead trees | Dry or damaged trees can still contain Lumber |
| Fallen logs | Check logs lying on the ground |
| Stumps | Small objects can contain a full node |
| Zone specific growths | Some zones use unusual natural objects for Lumber nodes |
Do not judge a route only by tree density. A route with clear sightlines and short travel distances can outperform a dense forest where nodes are difficult to see.
Mounted Lumber Gathering

The biggest efficiency milestone is collecting 250 pieces of a specific Lumber type. Once you reach that amount, you unlock mounted gathering for that Lumber type through its Lumberjack achievement.
| Situation | Best Approach |
| Before 250 Lumber | Use a mobile class and minimize unnecessary travel |
| After 250 Lumber | Gather that Lumber type while mounted |
| Especially convenient because of fast movement between nodes | |
| Multiple Lumber types | Each type has its own 250 piece milestone |
Druid is convenient, not mandatory. After the 250 piece milestone, mounted gathering reduces the difference between classes.
Essence of Lumber

Essence of Lumber is a rare resource that can be exchanged with Lestia Goldenstrike or Xiz’ro. One Essence can be exchanged for 20 Lumber of your chosen type.
This is useful when you are short on a specific material and do not want to spend another full farming session on it.
Important for achievements: as of Midnight 12.1, Essence exchanges no longer provide progress toward Lumberjack achievements. Farm the Lumber directly when you are working toward the 250 piece mounted gathering milestone.
How to Build an Efficient Lumber Route

The best Lumber route is one that keeps you moving with minimal dead travel. Do not build a route only around the largest forest on the map.
| Route Principle | Why It Works |
| Use circular routes | You cover a predictable area and return to earlier locations naturally |
| Prefer open terrain | Nodes are easier to see and reach |
| Keep elevation changes manageable | Less travel time between nodes |
| Use landmarks | Rivers, roads, ruins, and settlements make routes easier to remember |
| Change direction when competition rises | A different route can provide more available nodes than fighting other farmers |
| Track only useful resources | Reducing minimap clutter makes Lumber nodes easier to identify |
Simple Lumber Route
| Step | Action |
| 1 | Choose one zone with the Lumber type you need. |
| 2 | Start from a flight point or another easy landmark. |
| 3 | Follow a wide circular path through areas with visible nodes. |
| 4 | Collect every practical node along the route. |
| 5 | Return to the starting point and repeat. |
Do not force a route to be perfect. If a section repeatedly has no nodes, remove it. If another section consistently produces several nodes, expand the route around it.
Best Class for Lumber Farming

| Class | Why It Helps |
| Excellent mobility and very convenient gathering between nodes | |
| Strong movement tools for ground based routes and hostile areas | |
| Dracthyr | Strong movement options for covering large areas |
Druid is the most convenient choice for dedicated Lumber farming. The advantage is largest before you unlock mounted gathering for the Lumber type you are farming.
Best Addons for Lumber Farming

| Addon | Use |
| GatherMate2 | Tracks gathering locations and helps you build a useful farming map |
| Routes | Creates and displays repeatable farming routes |
| FarmHud | Provides a focused farming interface and route visibility |
GatherMate2 and Routes are the core setup. FarmHud can be useful for a dedicated farming character, but its Midnight functionality has had some issues, so keep the setup simple if you only want Lumber tracking.
Lumber Requirements for Housing Decor

Every profession based Player Housing decor recipe uses Lumber. The exact amount depends on the recipes you want to craft.
For older Lumber types, the commonly used reference totals are:
| Lumber | Reference Amount |
| Ironwood Lumber | 506 |
| Olemba Lumber | 512 |
| Coldwind Lumber | 465 |
| Ashwood Lumber | 451 |
| Bamboo Lumber | 526 |
| Shadowmoon Lumber | 451 |
| Fel Touched Lumber | 594 |
| Darkpine Lumber | 476 |
| Arden Lumber | 532 |
| Dragonpine Lumber | 654 |
| Dornic Fir Lumber | 559 |
These amounts are reference values from Housing material calculations and should not be treated as permanent totals. New recipes can change the amount required for a complete collection.
Current Midnight Lumber Requirement
For Thalassian Lumber, current community tracking after patch 12.1 lists 874 Lumber for one of each current Midnight profession decor item. This is a community tracked estimate rather than a permanent Blizzard requirement, so use it as a planning figure rather than an exact final total.
Common Lumber Farming Mistakes

| Mistake | Fix |
| Farming only dense forests | Test open areas with clear node visibility |
| Ignoring fallen logs and other node objects | Watch the minimap and check unusual natural objects |
| Keeping the old hatchet mechanic in mind | Use the Harvesting Hatchet once and enable Find Lumber from Tracking |
| Use any class and work toward the 250 piece mounted gathering milestone | |
| Farming without a route | Build a simple circular loop and adjust it after several runs |
| Ignoring Shadowmoon Lumber | Visit Draenor when you need the Warlords of Draenor material |
| Using Essence for Lumberjack achievement progress | Farm the Lumber directly when working toward 250 pieces |
| Farming until the route becomes inefficient | Change zones or switch to another Lumber type when the current route becomes crowded |
