World of Warcraft Characters Who Changed Azeroth

World of Warcraft Characters

World of Warcraft is a game with a rich story full of characters, both male and female, who have shaped the Azeroth in many ways. They have fought battles, made tough decisions, and left their mark on the game’s lore.

icon From Sylvanas Windrunner, the Banshee Queen, to Arthas Menethil’s becoming the Lich King, these characters (and dozens of others from this article) have created some of the most memorable moments in the game for me. We meet these characters in WoW raids where they serve as bosses or our allies, dungeons, quests, and unforgettable cinematics. Their stories are filled with iconic twists of the game plot, that kept me and millions of other players engaged for years.

icon Here’s my Top-10 list of WoW Characters (Female & Male):

icon In this article, I won’t be discussing ancient gods like Yogg-Saron (however, I will mention Elune), titans like Aman’thul, or other mysterious beings (in our blog, you will find a separate article about the History of Azeroth). Instead, I’ll focus on the characters who have had the most impact on the game’s story and who have left a strong impression on me as a World of Warcraft fan.

icon I will also divide them into 2 categories: Male and Female, since WoW is an MMORPG with almost 20 years of history, and like any other game of this genre, it has always highlighted the attractiveness of female characters and the brutality and power of male ones (at least it was so in the good old times).

World of Warcraft Female Characters

World of Warcraft Female Characters

icon In World of Warcraft, female characters have significantly shaped the game’s lore and story. They have been leaders, warriors, and powerful figures who have influenced major events across Azeroth. These characters are central to the game’s plot, and we can see them in numerous Blizzard’s cinematics (I will add the most memorable of them into this article). Their actions and decisions have had lasting impacts, making them some of the most important figures in the history of the game.

Sylvanas Windrunner (Banshee Queen, Undead Elf)

Sylvanas Windrunner

Lady Sylvanas Windrunner, also known as the Banshee Queen and the Dark Lady, was originally the Ranger-General of Silvermoon, a key leader of the high elves in Quel’Thalas. However, during the Third War, she was slain by Arthas Menethil, who was then the death knight. Arthas did not grant her a peaceful death; instead, he tore out her soul and turned her into a banshee, binding her to his will.

After being forced to serve Arthas and the Lich King, Sylvanas eventually broke free from their control when the Lich King’s power weakened. After getting her body back, Sylvanas promised to take revenge on Arthas. She created the Forsaken, a group of undead who also broke free from the Lich King’s control. Sylvanas became their leader and later joined the Horde.

As Warchief of the Horde, Sylvanas made several controversial decisions that led to significant events in Azeroth, including the burning of Teldrassil, which sparked the Fourth War between the Horde and the Alliance. Eventually, her actions revealed her alliance with the Jailer, a powerful entity in the Shadowlands. She sought to break the cycle of life and death but ultimately realized she had been deceived.

icon Memorable Game Moments:

  • Battle for Undercity: Sylvanas fought to reclaim the Undercity from traitors within her ranks. This battle showcased her ruthless determination to maintain control over her kingdom.
  • Burning of Teldrassil: Sylvanas ordered the destruction of the World Tree, Teldrassil, an act that ignited the Fourth War between the Horde and the Alliance.
  • Mak’gora with Saurfang: In a duel of honor, Sylvanas faced Varok Saurfang, a former ally who challenged her leadership. Her victory in this duel led to her abandonment of the Horde, as she revealed her true intentions to serve a higher power.
  • Helm of Domination Destruction: One of Sylvanas’ most memorable moments is her fight with the Lich King Bolvar Fordragon at Icecrown Citadel. She defeated Bolvar and took the Helm of Domination, the artifact that controlled the Scourge and the undead. Instead of wearing the helmet, Sylvanas destroyed it, shattering the barrier between Azeroth and the Shadowlands.
  • Final Battle in the Shadowlands: Sylvanas played a central role in the events of the Shadowlands. In the Sanctum of Domination, she was the last boss, and we finally defeated her (in LFR, Normal, Heroic, and Mythic difficulty). She also dropped the Vengeance’s Reins mount which is now a 1% drop chance. Her story ended in a reckoning, as she confronted the fragmented parts of her soul and sought redemption for her past actions.

icon Sylvanas’ story is full of drama, tragedy (when there’s no “good choice”), revenge, and complicated morality. It all makes her one of the most iconic figures in World of Warcraft’s history and my #1 WoW female character in this top.

Jaina Proudmoore (Mage, Human)

Jaina Proudmoore

Jaina Proudmoore is a powerful mage and one of the most important figures in World of Warcraft. She is the daughter of Admiral Daelin Proudmoore, the leader of Kul Tiras, a naval nation. From a young age, Jaina showed great potential in magic and was sent to study in Dalaran, the city of mages. There, she trained under Archmage Antonidas, becoming one of the most skilled mages in Azeroth.

Jaina was born in Kul Tiras, and as a young girl, she was sent to Dalaran to study magic. She quickly rose in the ranks due to her talent and dedication.

During the Third War, Jaina played a crucial role in the events that shaped Azeroth. She was initially a close ally and love interest of Prince Arthas Menethil, but when Arthas began to fall to darkness, Jaina chose to follow the advice of a mysterious prophet and led her people to safety in Kalimdor. There, she joined forces with the Horde and the night elves to defeat the Burning Legion at the Battle of Mount Hyjal.

After the war, Jaina founded the city of Theramore, which became the Alliance’s main base in Kalimdor. She always advocated for peace between the Horde and the Alliance, but her views changed after the Horde, under Garrosh Hellscream’s leadership, destroyed Theramore with a mana bomb. This event deeply affected Jaina, making her more hostile towards the Horde.

Jaina became the leader of the Kirin Tor, the ruling council of Dalaran, but she eventually left due to disagreements over the inclusion of the Horde in the city.

icon Memorable Game Moments:

  • Battle of Mount Hyjal: Jaina led the Alliance forces in the defense against the Burning Legion.
  • Founding of Theramore: Jaina established Theramore as the main Alliance base in Kalimdor.
  • Destruction of Theramore: Garrosh Hellscream used a mana bomb to destroy Theramore, killing many of Jaina’s friends and allies.
  • Siege of Orgrimmar: Jaina was a key figure in the assault on Garrosh Hellscream’s stronghold.
  • Fight with Arthas: Jaina encountered Arthas in Icecrown Citadel, where she tried to reason with him but ultimately had to accept his fate as the Lich King.
  • Warbringer Cinematic: A cinematic that shows Jaina raising her father’s ship from the depths, symbolizing her resolve to fight against the Horde.
  • Battle of Dazar’alor boss. We could defeat her during the BoD raid times to earn the Glacial Tidestorm mount, which was a 100% drop chance on Mythic difficulty. Now it’s become 1%, and I myself keep farming it weekly.

icon Jaina seems too young and naive and not prepared for the role that game creators are trying to give her (however, other lore characters who are still alive like Anduin Wrynn seem to be even less prepared). Either way, she remains one of the most beloved female characters in World of Warcraft.

Tyrande Whisperwind (Priestess of Elune, Night Elf)

Tyrande Whisperwind

Tyrande Whisperwind is the High Priestess of Elune and one of the most important leaders of the night elves in World of Warcraft. She was born in Suramar and grew up alongside the Stormrage brothers, Malfurion and Illidan. Tyrande chose to become a priestess of Elune, dedicating her life to the goddess. Over time, she became the leader of the Sisterhood of Elune and the night elf Sentinels.

Tyrande played a key role in the War of the Ancients, where she fought against the Burning Legion’s invasion. After the war, she continued to guide the night elves for thousands of years, leading them through many trials and battles. She is also known for her relationship with Malfurion Stormrage. She married him after rescuing him from the Emerald Nightmare.

Throughout the history of Azeroth, Tyrande has been involved in many significant events. She led the night elves in the Third War, where they defended Mount Hyjal from the Burning Legion. Tyrande also played a crucial role in battles against the Horde, especially during the War of the Thorns, where Teldrassil was destroyed. In response, she became the Night Warrior, the avatar of Elune’s wrath, seeking vengeance for her fallen people.

icon Memorable Game Moments:

  • Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos (2002): Tyrande plays a key role as a hero unit, leading the night elves in the campaign against the Burning Legion. You directly control her in several missions.
  • Battle for Mount Hyjal (WoW Raid): In this raid from The Burning Crusade expansion, Tyrande assists players during the battle against the Burning Legion at Hyjal Summit.
  • End Time (Dungeon in Cataclysm): Tyrande appears as a boss in this dungeon, where players face an “Echo of Tyrande.” The most valuable item dropped by her is the Echo of Light.
  • Val’sharah (Legion Expansion): Tyrande plays a significant role in the story as she searches for Malfurion, who is captured by Xavius. Players assist her in various quests in the zone.
  • Darkshore Warfront (Battle for Azeroth): Tyrande undergoes the ritual to become the Night Warrior to seek vengeance against Sylvanas for the burning of Teldrassil. Players participate in events leading up to this transformation.
  • Shadowlands Expansion: Tyrande pursues Sylvanas Windrunner in the Shadowlands, becoming a central character in the storyline, particularly in Ardenweald, where she struggles with the power of the Night Warrior and her desire for vengeance.
  • Sanctum of Domination (Shadowlands Raid): Tyrande does not serve as a boss, but she confronts Sylvanas in a cinematic after the final battle in this raid. She decides Sylvanas’s fate, sending her to the Maw to atone for her crimes.
  • Dragonflight Expansion: Tyrande is involved in the storyline concerning the Emerald Dream, where she and Malfurion Stormrage work to bring Ysera back to life. However, this comes at the cost of Malfurion taking Ysera’s place in the Shadowlands.

icon In my opinion, Tyrande’s character is becoming more and more diverse and interesting from expansion to expansion. And there’s a chance (probably, it’s even already so) that Tyrande will become no less iconic than Jaina or Sylvanas.

Alexstrasza the Life-Binder (Aspect of Life, Dragon)

Alexstrasza

Alexstrasza the Life-Binder is a powerful dragon and a leader of the red dragonflight. She is one of the most important figures in World of Warcraft’s lore. Alexstrasza was chosen by the Titans to be the guardian of life in Azeroth and was given a portion of their power. Known as the Dragon Queen, she has guided and protected life in Azeroth for millennia.

Alexstrasza was one of the original five Dragon Aspects, empowered by the Titans to safeguard Azeroth. She was given the title of Life-Binder, reflecting her role in nurturing and preserving life across the world. As the leader of the red dragonflight, she has been at the forefront of defending Azeroth from numerous threats.

Throughout her long life, Alexstrasza has faced many challenges and adversaries. During the War of the Ancients, she fought against the Burning Legion and was later betrayed by her fellow Aspect, Deathwing, who used the Dragon Soul to steal power from the other Aspects. Despite these hardships, Alexstrasza remained steadfast in her duty to protect life. She played a key role in many of Azeroth’s major conflicts, including the Nexus War against Malygos and the war against Deathwing during the Cataclysm.

icon Memorable Game Moments:

  • Battle of Grim Batol: Alexstrasza was enslaved by the Dragonmaw clan during the Second War, forced to breed dragons for the Horde’s war machine. She was eventually freed by the mage Rhonin and her fellow dragons, leading to her reclaiming her role as a protector of life.
  • Nexus War: In the Wrath of the Lich King expansion, Alexstrasza led the Wyrmrest Accord against Malygos, the Aspect of Magic, who sought to control all magic on Azeroth. Her leadership was crucial in defeating Malygos and preventing the destruction of the world’s magical balance.
  • Twilight Highlands: During the Cataclysm, Alexstrasza faced Deathwing in a fierce battle. Though gravely injured, she survived and continued to lead her flight in the fight against the corrupted Aspect.
  • Dragon Soul Raid: Alexstrasza and the other Aspects empowered the Dragon Soul, a powerful artifact used by Thrall to defeat Deathwing. This battle marked the end of Deathwing’s reign of terror and the loss of the Aspects’ powers, as their purpose was fulfilled.
  • In Dragonflight, Alexstrasza returns to her homeland, the Dragon Isles. Here, she works to unite the dragonflights once more to face the Primal Incarnates (including Raszageth, Sarkareth, and Fyrakk), ancient enemies of the dragons. Her leadership was crucial in the ongoing battle to protect Azeroth from these new threats. And, as we know now, in TWW, at least in Dragonflight, it all worked out.

icon Alexstrasza the Life-Binder has played a crucial role in many of Azeroth’s key events, including the War of the Ancients and the defeat of Deathwing. In Dragonflight expansion, she was one of the main quest givers and NPCs we travel with. She’s been a major part of the franchise since the RTS games. Dragonflight expansion has revealed new sides of this female WoW character to me, so I expect we’ll meet her in the future parts of the game many more times.

Onyxia (Black Dragon, Daughter of Deathwing)

Onyxia

Onyxia, daughter of the black dragon Deathwing, was a clever and dangerous member of the black dragonflight. She could change into human form and use this ability to trick and control the politics of the mortal races. As Lady Katrana Prestor, she became a trusted advisor to King Varian Wrynn of Stormwind, secretly working to take over the kingdom.

Onyxia’s goal was to control Stormwind by causing problems and weakening its leadership. She played a role in the events that led to the death of Queen Tiffin Wrynn and even arranged for King Varian Wrynn to be kidnapped. This kidnapping split Varian into two separate personalities: one weak and easy to control, and the other a strong warrior. However, Varian pulled himself together and together with heroes (players) fought Onyxia in her lair.

The battle in Onyxia’s Lair is one of the most famous moments in World of Warcraft (whenever you start googling WoW raids, Onyxia’s Lair is always one of the first ones that gets found). King Varian, his allies, and adventurers from all over Azeroth fought their way through her minions to face her in an epic fight (even in WotLK times “fighting through her minions” took 10-15 minutes, because there were just a few of them). Onyxia tries to use her magic to win, but in the end, Varian defeats her with the legendary sword Shalamayne, bringing an end to her evil plans.

Even after her death, Onyxia was brought back to life by her brother Nefarian during the Cataclysm expansion, becoming an undead dragon. Players fought her again in the Blackwing Descent raid, and she was defeated once more.

icon Memorable Game Moments:

  • Revealing Onyxia’s True Form: In Stormwind Keep, Varian Wrynn revealed that Lady Prestor was actually Onyxia, a black dragon. This caused a big fight in the heart of Stormwind.
  • Battle in Onyxia’s Lair: In one of WoW’s earliest raids, players fought through Onyxia‘s dragon minions and then faced her in a tough battle inside her lair.
  • Return in Cataclysm: Onyxia was brought back as an undead dragon by her brother, Nefarian, during the Cataclysm expansion. Players had to defeat her again in the Blackwing Descent raid.
  • Onyxia’s Head Trophy: After defeating Onyxia, players could see her head in Stormwind or Orgrimmar.
  • Final Battle with Onyxia: In the end, Varian Wrynn and his allies fought Onyxia in her lair. Varian used his legendary sword, Shalamayne, to deliver the final blow, marking a major victory for the Alliance.
  • After Onyxia’s defeat, players had a chance to obtain a rare mount called the Reins of the Onyxian Drake. This mount resembles Onyxia herself, with black scales and fiery eyes

icon Despite all the defeats listed above, Onyxia remains one of the most iconic and feared dragons in World of Warcraft’s history and is worth being mentioned in this list of the most memorable WoW female characters.

Azshara (Night Elf/Queen of the Naga)

Azshara

Queen Azshara was once the ruler of the night elves and the Kaldorei Empire. She was famous for her great beauty and powerful magic. Azshara was born with golden eyes, a sign of greatness among her people. As queen, she became obsessed with the Well of Eternity, a source of immense power. She wanted to use it to make the world perfect in her own eyes.

During her reign, Azshara made a deal with Sargeras, the leader of the Burning Legion, a group of demons bent on destroying Azeroth. She allowed the Legion to enter her world. It led to the War of the Ancients, a huge conflict that nearly destroyed everything. As the war went on, the Well of Eternity became unstable. It caused a huge explosion, known as the Great Sundering.

As the land around her sank into the sea, Azshara and her followers were pulled into the depths. There, they were saved by the Old God N’Zoth, who transformed them into naga, a race of serpent-like beings. Azshara became the queen of the naga, building a new empire underwater in the city of Nazjatar.

In Cataclysm and Battle for Azeroth, Azshara returned as a major threat. She tried to control Neptulon, the Elemental Lord of Water, and later worked with N’Zoth to achieve her own goals. In Battle for Azeroth, she trapped the Alliance and Horde fleets and brought them to Nazjatar, hoping to use them to free N’Zoth from his prison.

Those who played BFA Patch 8.2, fought Azshara in the Eternal Palace raid, where she was finally defeated. However, her defeat also gave freedom to N’Zoth.

icon Even after her defeat, Azshara remains one of the most memorable female characters in World of Warcraft.

Aegwynn (Human Mage)

Aegwynn

I started playing WoW on the EU Aegwynn Alliance server (it’s one of the most popular European realms), and that’s why pretty soon I decided to find out who is Aegwynn. It’s an iconic WoW female character, after whom the most populated servers are named (so many gamers play there).

Aegwynn, one of the most powerful mages in Azeroth’s history, was the only female Guardian of Tirisfal, a position that tasked her with protecting the world from demonic threats, especially the Burning Legion. Trained by Magna Scavell, Aegwynn quickly proved her exceptional magical talent, mastering spells that even her peers struggled with. Her determination and skill earned her the mantle of Guardian, a role she held for over 1,000 years.

Aegwynn’s lore is filled with remarkable events. She was fiercely independent, often defying the Council of Tirisfal to act on her own. One of her most significant actions was battling the Avatar of Sargeras in Northrend. Believing she had defeated the demon lord, she unknowingly allowed his spirit to enter her body, setting the stage for future conflicts. This battle led to her placing Sargeras’s body in what became known as the Tomb of Sargeras, a key location in later events.

Her most notable moment came when she decided to pass on her powers by having a child, Medivh, who would later become a central figure in Azeroth’s history. Unfortunately, Sargeras’s influence over her was passed to Medivh, leading to his corruption and the opening of the Dark Portal, which brought the orcs to Azeroth and started the First War.

In her later years, Aegwynn lived in seclusion but eventually returned to aid her grandson, Med’an, in his battles.

Her final act of sacrifice helped defeat the ogre mage Cho’gall, and she was buried near her son, Medivh, at Karazhan.

In World of Warcraft: Legion, Aegwynn appears as an echo of her former self in the Tomb of Sargeras. Players meet this echo during the Cathedral of Eternal Night dungeon. After they defeat the demon Mephistroth, Aegwynn’s echo helps the players by explaining how to use the Pillars of Creation to restore the protective wards in the Tomb. These wards were originally placed by Aegwynn to keep the demons from taking over.

icon Even though we don’t meet this female character frequently in WoW, she is very significant in the Warcraft universe. Top-tier servers are named in her honor, and I’m sure we’ll meet her or some of her echoes in upcoming game content.

Ysera (Aspect of Dreams, Dragon)

Ysera

Ysera the Dreamer, was the Dragon Aspect of the green dragonflight, tasked with protecting the Emerald Dream—a mystical realm that mirrors the natural world. She was one of the five Dragon Aspects, granted immense power by the Titans to protect Azeroth. Ysera spent much of her life in a trance-like state, deeply connected to the Emerald Dream, watching over the balance of nature.

Ysera’s lore is rich and filled with both triumphs and tragedies. During the War of the Ancients, she and the other Aspects infused their power into the Dragon Soul, not knowing it would later be used by Deathwing to betray them. Ysera played a key role in many battles, including the fight against the Nightmare Lord in the Emerald Dream. Unfortunately, she eventually fell victim to this corruption herself, turning into a dragon of Nightmare. In a sorrowful battle, she was put to rest by Tyrande Whisperwind and the Cenarion Circle.

Even in death, Ysera‘s story continued. Her spirit found a new home in Ardenweald, one of the realms in the Shadowlands, where souls tied to nature are reborn. In Ardenweald, Ysera was resurrected by the Winter Queen but bound to that realm, unable to return to Azeroth. This changed when Malfurion Stormrage sacrificed his place in Ardenweald, allowing Ysera to return to Azeroth, though now touched by death.

icon Memorable Game Moments:

  • In Legion, Ysera plays a key role in the Val’sharah storyline. She is corrupted by the Emerald Nightmare, a force of evil that twists nature and dreams. Under this influence, Ysera turns into a dark, corrupted version of herself, becoming a major boss fight. Sadly, she is defeated by the player and put to rest by Tyrande Whisperwind, one of her closest allies. After her death, Elune, the night elf goddess, purifies Ysera‘s spirit, and she ascends to the sky in the form of a constellation.
  • In Shadowlands, Ysera returns, not as a living dragon, but as a spirit in the realm of Ardenweald, a part of the Shadowlands where nature spirits are reborn. She is brought back to life by the Winter Queen, the ruler of Ardenweald, but with a catch—Ysera is now bound to Ardenweald and cannot leave the Shadowlands. Despite this, she continues to play a crucial role in helping the players and guiding them through the challenges in this afterlife realm, including assisting in saving night elf souls and combating the Drust, a malevolent force trying to invade Ardenweald.

icon Ysera’s story is one of dedication, sacrifice, and a deep connection to the natural world, making her one of the most beloved and tragic female characters in Warcraft lore (thus at least she got alive in Shadowlands).

Valeera Sanguinar (Rogue, Blood Elf)

Valeera Sanguinar

Valeera Sanguinar is a female blood elf rogue. She’s shown as a close ally of the Wrynn family. Born in Quel’Thalas, Valeera lost her family to bandits and survived alone by stealing. Eventually, she was captured and sold into gladiator combat, where she met Varian Wrynn, the future King of Stormwind, and the night elf druid Broll Bearmantle. This companionship marked the beginning of Valeera‘s deep loyalty to the Wrynns.

As Varian’s bodyguard and advisor, Valeera was fiercely loyal to him and later to his son, Anduin. Though a blood elf, Valeera chose not to align herself with either the Horde or the Alliance, instead remaining independent while deeply committed to her friends and ideals. This independence allowed her to operate as a skilled spy and assassin, roles that often put her at the heart of critical events in Azeroth.
One of Valeera’s most memorable moments was her battle with the warlock Kathra’natir, who attempted to possess her. Despite struggling with magical addiction, she resisted the demon’s influence, and continued to serve the Wrynns. She also played a key role during the Scourge Invasion and later joined the Uncrowned (a secret group of rogues fighting against the Burning Legion).

icon Memorable game moments:

  • We first met Valeera Sanguinar in World of Warcraft during the Wrath of the Lich King expansion.
  • She also appeared in the Battle for the Undercity questline. There this character helped the Alliance to reclaim the city.
  • In the Legion expansion, Valeera played a key role in the rogue class campaign as a member of the Uncrowned.
  • We (players) can also interact with her in the Hall of Shadows, the rogues’ order hall.
  • She also appeared in Battle for Azeroth and Shadowlands expansions.

icon Valeera has been one of the main characters in numerous significant World of Warcraft events. She has helped Anduin Wrynn with diplomatic missions, uncovered threats against the Alliance, and took part in battles against the Burning Legion. All described above makes her a respected well-known female character in World of Warcraft.

Elune (Moon Goddess)

Elune

Elune is the moon goddess in World of Warcraft, deeply connected to the cosmic realm of Life. She is worshipped by several races, but most notably by the night elves, who consider her their primary deity. Elune is also known to the Tauren as Mu’sha, the left eye of the Earth Mother, and she is the mother of Cenarius, a powerful druidic figure. While much about her true origins remains a mystery, she is revered for her nurturing and healing qualities, as well as her ability to bring peace.

Elune plays a significant role in night elf culture and is closely linked to the natural world. She is often invoked during moments of great need, especially by her high priestess, Tyrande Whisperwind. In times of war, Elune has shown her more wrathful side, manifesting as the Night Warrior, an aspect of her that channels her vengeance and fury to protect her people.

One of Elune’s most notable appearances in recent events was during the “Burning of Teldrassil,” where many night elves died. Their souls were sent to the Shadowlands, and Elune believed she was guiding them to the safety of Ardenweald. However, due to the breakdown of the afterlife system, their souls were sent to the Maw, leading to great sorrow for Elune. She later communicated with her sister, the Winter Queen of Ardenweald, and together they began restoring the balance between Life and Death.

icon Memorable Game Moments:

  • War of the Ancients: I first learned about Elune through the lore of the War of the Ancients. She was the main goddess worshipped by the night elves.
  • World of Warcraft: Classic: As I explored night elf zones, I saw many temples and moonwells dedicated to Elune. She was a big part of their culture.
  • The Burning Crusade: Elune appeared again in quests related to the night elves, showing their deep connection to her.
  • Legion: In Legion, we had to find the Tears of Elune, one of the Pillars of Creation. This added more mystery to her and hinted at her connection with the Titans.
  • Battle for Azeroth: Elune played a key role during the War of Thorns and the Battle for Darkshore. Tyrande became the Night Warrior, showing Elune’s powerful and fierce side.
  • Shadowlands: Elune’s connection to the Winter Queen in Ardenweald was revealed, showing her role in the balance between Life and Death.

icon I tried to include in this list WoW female characters that made a significant influence in Azeroth. And considering that Night Elves are deeply involved in thousands of quests, raids, and dungeons, and these guys constantly mention Elune, I got a strong feeling that her presence is constantly felt while you play the game.

World of Warcraft Male Characters

World of Warcraft Male Characters

icon The history of World of Warcraft has been shaped by many important male characters. These figures include warriors, leaders, and villains who have had a major impact on the world of Azeroth. Characters like Arthas Menethil, who became the Lich King, Illidan, and Thrall, the former Warchief of the Horde, are central to the game’s story.

While making this top, I tried to consider all the male characters that have played a significant role in the World of Warcraft’s lore. Of course, it may be a bit personal, but in my opinion, the guys whom I mentioned in this article, deserve their place here for 100%.

Arthas Menethil (The Lich King)

Lich King

Arthas Menethil was the Crown Prince of Lordaeron and a paladin trained by Uther the Lightbringer. He started as a noble and dedicated protector of his people, determined to stop the spread of a mysterious plague across his homeland. However, Arthas’s pursuit of justice led him down a dark path, eventually becoming one of the most feared and powerful figures in Azeroth’s history—the Lich King.

Arthas was born into the royal family of Lordaeron, the son of King Terenas Menethil II. He was groomed to be a leader and trained as a paladin in the Order of the Silver Hand. His early life was marked by his strong sense of duty and his close relationships with his mentor, Uther, and his love interest, Jaina Proudmoore.

Arthas Menethil‘s life took a tragic turn during the events of the Third War. In his quest to stop the plague, he made increasingly desperate decisions, culminating in the culling of Stratholme, where he ordered the massacre of the city’s citizens to prevent them from turning into undead. This event marked the beginning of his fall. Seeking the power to defeat the demon Mal’Ganis, Arthas took up the cursed sword Frostmourne, which claimed his soul and turned him into a death knight, enslaved to the Lich King. He returned to Lordaeron, murdered his father, and led the Scourge in a campaign of destruction that ravaged the lands of Quel’Thalas and Dalaran. Eventually, Arthas journeyed to Northrend, where he merged with the Lich King, Ner’zhul, taking his place on the Frozen Throne.

icon Memorable Game Moments:

  • Culling of Stratholme: Players witnessed Arthas’s descent into madness as he purged the city of its infected inhabitants, a pivotal moment in Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos.
  • Claiming Frostmourne: Arthas’s fateful decision to take up the cursed blade Frostmourne, sacrificing his soul to gain the power to defeat Mal’Ganis.
  • Murder of King Terenas: Arthas’s return to Lordaeron, where he killed his father and shattered the kingdom he once swore to protect.
  • Fall of Quel’Thalas: Arthas led the Scourge in destroying the high elven kingdom, killing Sylvanas Windrunner and raising her as a banshee.
  • Becoming the Lich King: In the final battle at the Frozen Throne, Arthas defeated Illidan Stormrage and donned the Helm of Domination, fully embracing his role as the Lich King.
  • Final Defeat: Arthas was defeated by adventurers in the Icecrown Citadel raid during the Wrath of the Lich King (and keeps being defeated several times a week on all alts by many players, trying to get the Invincible’s Reins). His soul was freed from Frostmourne, and he died in the arms of his father’s spirit.

icon Arthas’s story is one of the most tragic male character’s stories in WoW, showing how a hero’s desire to protect his people can lead to his downfall and transformation into a villain. As for me, deep in my head, Arthas and Lich King are still a synonym for real World of Warcraft, even though we defeated him almost 10 years ago.

Illidan Stormrage (Demon Hunter – Night Elf)

Illidan Stormrage

Illidan Stormrage was once a night elf sorcerer and the twin brother of Malfurion Stormrage. He had a natural affinity for magic, unlike his brother, who became a druid. Illidan’s desire for power and his love for Tyrande Whisperwind drove many of his actions, leading to his eventual transformation into a demon hunter.

Illidan’s journey began during the War of the Ancients when he betrayed his people by siding with the Burning Legion to gain power, though his true aim was to protect Azeroth. After creating a new Well of Eternity, he was imprisoned for 10,000 years for his actions. When released during the Third War, he consumed the Skull of Gul’dan, transforming into a demon to defeat the dreadlord Tichondrius. After failing to defeat the Lich King in Northrend, Illidan fled to Outland, where he declared himself the Lord of Outland. His ultimate goal was to destroy the Burning Legion, but his extreme methods alienated many, leading to his downfall.

icon Memorable Game Moments:

  • Battle Against Arthas in Icecrown: Illidan’s battle with Arthas in “Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne” where Arthas defeats him and becomes the Lich King.
  • The Burning Crusade Expansion: Illidan served as the final boss in the Black Temple raid, where players defeated him. Some of us keep farming this boss even in Retail to get the Warglaives transmog and the Warglaives of Azzinoth feat of strength.
  • Cinematic “You Are Not Prepared”: The iconic moment from The Burning Crusade cinematic where Illidan declares, “You are not prepared!”
  • Legion Expansion Return: Illidan is resurrected in the Legion expansion, where he plays a crucial role in the fight against the Burning Legion.

  • Becoming Sargeras’ Jailor: At the end of Legion, Illidan stays behind at the Seat of the Pantheon to imprison Sargeras, accepting his role as the eternal jailor of the dark titan.

icon Illidan Stormrage’s story is full of power, sacrifice, and tragedy. For me, it is one of the main male characters in World of Warcraft, I would say he is Top-2 after Arthas.

Varian Wrynn (Warrior – Human)

Varian Wrynn

Varian Wrynn was born as the crown prince of Stormwind. His life took a tragic turn during the First War when his father, King Llane, was assassinated by Garona Halforcen, and Stormwind was destroyed by the Orcish Horde. Varian was taken to Lordaeron, where he grew up under the protection of Anduin Lothar and eventually became King of Stormwind.

Varian’s life was marked by struggle and loss. After Stormwind was rebuilt following the Second War, Varian faced numerous challenges, including the death of his wife Tiffin in a riot. Later, he was kidnapped by the Defias Brotherhood and underwent a dark ritual that split him into two separate beings: one who became a gladiator named Lo’Gosh and another who returned to Stormwind under the influence of Lady Katrana Prestor, secretly the black dragon Onyxia. These two halves eventually merged, allowing Varian to reclaim his throne and lead his people through numerous conflicts, including wars against the Lich King and the Horde.

icon Memorable Game Moments:

  • The Battle for Undercity: Varian led the Alliance forces to reclaim Undercity after the betrayal of Varimathras and Putress.
  • Wrathgate Cinematic: Varian’s reaction to the betrayal at Wrathgate solidified his resolve against the Horde, marking a pivotal moment in the Alliance-Horde conflict.
  • Siege of Orgrimmar: Varian played a key role in the Siege of Orgrimmar, where he confronted Garrosh Hellscream and chose not to dismantle the Horde, showing his complex approach to leadership.
  • Legion’s Broken Shore Cinematic: Varian’s final stand against the Burning Legion at the Broken Shore, where he sacrificed himself to ensure the Alliance’s survival, remains one of the most memorable moments in Warcraft history.
  • Wrynnfall: The aftermath of Varian’s death left a lasting impact on the Alliance, with his son Anduin succeeding him as King of Stormwind. The site of his death is now known as Wrynnfall.

icon Varian Wrynn’s legacy as a warrior king and his dedication to the Alliance have made him one of the most revered male characters in World of Warcraft’s history.

Anduin Wrynn (Priest – Human)

Anduin Wrynn

Anduin Wrynn is the son of Varian Wrynn, the former king of Stormwind, and Tiffin Wrynn. Named after Anduin Lothar and King Llane, Anduin was thrust into leadership at a young age when his father went missing, leaving him as a symbolic figurehead under the guidance of Highlord Bolvar Fordragon.

From a young age, Anduin showed an inclination towards peace and diplomacy, contrasting sharply with his father’s warrior nature. Despite his gentle disposition, he was caught in the storm of conflicts that shaped Azeroth.

As he grew up, Anduin formed a deep connection with the Light, leading him to become a priest. His time spent in Pandaria during the Alliance-Horde conflict solidified his views on peace, even as he was forced to confront the harsh realities of war. After Varian’s death during the Legion’s invasion, Anduin ascended as the King of Stormwind and High King of the Alliance, continuing his father’s legacy while striving for a lasting peace across the world.

icon Memorable Game Moments:

  • Battle for Undercity: As a young prince, Anduin witnessed the devastation of the Undercity when Sylvanas reclaimed it from traitors.
  • Mists of Pandaria: Anduin played a pivotal role in the Pandaria storyline, especially when he tried to stop Garrosh Hellscream from using the Divine Bell.
  • Legion Cinematic: After his father’s death at the Broken Shore, Anduin was seen in a touching cinematic, where he found Varian’s broken sword and resolved to lead the Alliance with a blend of his father’s strength and his compassion.

  • Before the Storm: Anduin attempted to broker peace between Forsaken and their human relatives, which ended tragically when Sylvanas ordered the Forsaken’s massacre, a pivotal moment highlighting the futility of his peace efforts.
  • Shadowlands Cinematic: In the aftermath of Sylvanas’s betrayal and the opening of the Shadowlands, Anduin was seen struggling with his role as a leader, eventually being captured and corrupted by the Jailer, which leads to his reluctant involvement in the Jailer‘s schemes.
  • In The War Within cinematic, Anduin Wrynn is shown struggling with his past actions and the weight of his responsibilities. He reflects on the time when he was controlled by the Jailer, feeling deep guilt and pain. Anduin is haunted by memories but begins to find a sense of clarity. Though he is initially distant from his allies like Jaina and Genn, the cinematic ends with Anduin realizing he must move forward and take up his role as a leader again. The cinematic focuses on his internal conflict and sets up his return to leadership.

icon Anduin Wrynn‘s story is marked by his struggle to balance his desire for peace with the brutal demands of leadership. However, especially in The War Within expansion, this guy will be the central figure of World of Warcraft, so what we have right now, in my opinion, is the real beginning of this character’s story, which will be central to TWW, and probably the WorldSoul saga.

Thrall (Shaman – Orc)

Thrall

Thrall, originally named Go’el, is the son of Durotan, chieftain of the Frostwolf Clan, and Draka. He was raised as a slave by humans, surviving harsh conditions before eventually escaping and embracing his destiny as a leader of the orcish people.

icon Thrall‘s story is marked by his effort to balance the brutal legacy of the orcs with a vision of peace and stability for the Horde. This male character played a pivotal role in the Third War, working alongside Jaina Proudmoore and other leaders to defeat the Burning Legion at the Battle of Mount Hyjal. Later, during the Cataclysm, Thrall stepped down as Warchief to lead the Earthen Ring, focusing on healing the world.

Guldan

Gul’dan, known as the first orcish warlock, was born weak and deformed in a village in Gorgrond. His early life was filled with hardship, leading to his eventual exile. During his wandering, he sought power and was approached by Kil’jaeden, a demon lord of the Burning Legion, who offered him immense power in exchange for his loyalty. Gul’dan accepted, becoming a powerful warlock and betraying his people for his gain.

Gul’dan‘s rise to power marked the beginning of the orcs’ descent into darkness. He manipulated the orcs into drinking the blood of Mannoroth, binding them to the Burning Legion, and starting their journey toward becoming the bloodthirsty Horde. He founded the Shadow Council, a group of powerful warlocks who secretly controlled the Horde, and created the first death knights.

Throughout his life, Gul’dan was driven by his insatiable thirst for power. He betrayed his mentor Ner’zhul, seized control of the Horde, and even allied with Medivh to open the Dark Portal, bringing the orcs to Azeroth and starting the First War. His highest goal was to gain godlike power by finding the Tomb of Sargeras.

  • The Vision in Shadowmoon Valley: In The Burning Crusade, players encounter a vision of Gul’dan in Shadowmoon Valley, where he severs the orcs’ connection to the elements, creating the Hand of Gul’dan.

Bolvar Fordragon (Paladin/Current Lich King – Human)

Bolvar Fordragon

Bolvar Fordragon was a revered paladin of the Alliance and served as the Regent of Stormwind during King Varian Wrynn‘s absence. A loyal and honorable leader, Bolvar led the defense of Stormwind and later commanded the Alliance forces in Northrend against the Scourge. His fate changed drastically at the Battle of Angrathar the Wrathgate, where he was caught in a Forsaken plague attack and believed dead.

However, Bolvar survived, though severely burned and altered by the red dragonflight’s flames. Captured and tortured by the Lich King, Bolvar resisted the dark influence and, after Arthas Menethil‘s defeat, he took on the Helm of Domination to become the new Lich King. Bolvar vowed to contain the Scourge and act as the “Jailer of the Damned,” ensuring the world was safe from the undead menace.
In the Shadowlands expansion, Bolvar’s role as the Lich King was brought to a dramatic conclusion. Sylvanas Windrunner confronted him at Icecrown Citadel, defeated him, and shattered the Helm of Domination, breaking the veil between Azeroth and the Shadowlands.

icon Memorable Game Moments:

Khadgar (Mage – Human)

Khadgar

Khadgar is one of the most powerful mages in Azeroth’s history. Originally sent by the Kirin Tor to apprentice under Medivh, the last Guardian of Tirisfal, Khadgar quickly discovered that his master was corrupted by the demon lord Sargeras. Despite his young age, Khadgar played a crucial role in the defeat of Medivh, which helped to prevent the complete destruction of Azeroth by the Burning Legion.

After Medivh’s fall, Khadgar joined the Alliance during the Second War, where he studied Medivh’s spells and became instrumental in the fight against the orcish Horde. He later led the Alliance Expedition to Draenor to stop the orcs’ dark plans, closing the Dark Portal and saving Azeroth from destruction, though he was believed lost in the explosion that destroyed Draenor.

Khadgar reemerged during the events of the Burning Crusade, where he guided players in Shattrath City. He became a central figure in the fight against the Burning Legion, assisting both the Alliance and the Horde in their battle to protect Azeroth. During the Warlords of Draenor expansion, Khadgar took a leading role in the fight against Gul’dan and the Iron Horde.

Saurfang

Varok Saurfang was a legendary orc warrior of the Horde, known for his deep sense of honor and loyalty. Saurfang later became a key figure in the Horde’s invasion of Azeroth and fought in many major conflicts, including the First, Second, Third, and Fourth Wars.

During the Third War, Saurfang joined Thrall‘s new Horde and fought alongside heroes like Rexxar and Hellscream. He later became the Supreme Commander of the Might of Kalimdor during the battle against the Qiraji in Silithus.

Saurfang’s life was marked by tragedy when his son, Dranosh Saurfang, was killed by the Lich King at the Wrathgate in Northrend. Saurfang retrieved his son’s body from Icecrown Citadel after it was reanimated as a death knight and laid it to rest in Nagrand.

Nerzhul

Ner’zhul was originally the chieftain of the Shadowmoon clan and a respected shaman among the orcs of Draenor. He was known for his deep connection with the spirits and was a leader who commanded great respect. However, his life took a dark turn when he was deceived by Kil’jaeden, a powerful demon of the Burning Legion, who posed as the spirit of Ner’zhul’s deceased mate. This deception led Ner’zhul to betray his people by binding them to the Burning Legion, marking the beginning of the orcs’ descent into corruption.

As the Horde waged war across Draenor and Azeroth, Ner’zhul realized the truth but found himself powerless to stop the destruction he had set in motion. Gul’dan, his former apprentice, usurped his power, and Ner’zhul was relegated to a ceremonial role. Despite his diminished status, he played a crucial role in advising Durotan of the Frostwolf Clan to reject the Blood of Mannoroth, saving his clan from the worst of the orcish corruption.

After the Horde’s defeat in the Second War, Ner’zhul attempted to open new portals to other worlds, hoping to escape Draenor’s impending destruction. However, his actions only led to the planet’s shattering, creating the broken world of Outland. Kil’jaeden eventually captured Ner’zhul and transformed him into the Lich King, imprisoning his spirit within the Frozen Throne in Northrend.
